How we can help
- Every 9 seconds, someone in the
United States sustains a brain injury.
- At least 5.3 million Americans
live with disabilities from brain injuries, and more than
250,000 of these people live in Illinois.
- Each year 2.2 million children and
adults are treated and released from emergency rooms for TBI.
- Falls are the #1 cause of brain
injury.
- The cost of traumatic brain
injury, in the United States, exceeds $48 BILLION annually.
- Brain injuries are the #1 killer
of persons under the age of 44. They kill more Americans under
the age of 34 than all diseases combined.
- When someone sustains a brain
injury, many people are impacted by the injury.
The Brain Injury
Association of Illinois (BIA of IL) is a
statewide non-profit organization providing an
information & resource call center, education,
programs and services to individuals who have
sustained a brain injury (traumatic and
acquired), family members/caregivers,
rehabilitation professionals, and the community
at large. The BIA of IL is part of a network of
brain injury associations across the United
States, and is an affiliate of the Brain Injury
Association of America (BIAA). The BIA of IL is
the only statewide organization in Illinois
serving individuals with Acquired Brain Injury,
their families and professionals who treat them.
The BIA of IL is dedicated to providing
information, resources, education, advocacy, and
support.
The mission of the
Brain Injury Association of Illinois is to create a better future
through brain injury awareness, prevention, education and advocacy.
This is
accomplished through:
-
Acting as an
Information & Resource Center
-
Providing brain
injury education and hosting an annual educational conference
-
Facilitation of
statewide support groups
-
Hosting adult and
pediatric therapeutic recreational camps
-
Actively
participating in legislative advocacy
-
Providing injury
prevention awareness programs
-
Encouraging
research opportunities and participation
The
organization works with families and
professionals to communicate in a way that
improves relationships and cooperation, enhances
teamwork and helps decrease potential issues
that might arise. In this era of managed care
and organizational changes, providers and
agencies search for viable options for their
patients due to decreased resources, lengths of
stay, and changing family structures. BIA of IL
feels collaboration is critical for effective
service delivery, and works as a partner to the
providers and the patient as needed. The Brain
Injury Association of Illinois works with local,
state and national organizations to consistently
lead Illinois in providing quality, affordable
and accessible services to people with brain
injuries and their families. The BIA of Illinois
is dedicated to providing information,
resources, advocacy, and support.
Thank you for your interest and support of the
Brain Injury Association of Illinois!
